SUSAN DAVIDOFF: "THE SKY SUITE"

SUSAN DAVIDOFF: "THE SKY SUITE"

APRIL 29 - JUNE 3, 2006
Artist's Reception: Saturday, April 29 6-8PM

Exhibition continues through June 3

Davidoff's exhibition of etchings, monotypes, and drawings explore structure in nature, and the overlay of systems we have developed for observing, mapping, and defining natural forms and phenomena.

The Sky Suite, a suite of four etchings, references the Davis Mountains and central Texas. These etchings are printed from hand-drawn copper plates and hand-applied cochineal, a natural pigment used in Mexico for hundreds of years. Found in her etchings are the artist's comet and other astronomical images derived from drawings by an early astrologer and contemporary diagrams of the earth's magnetosphere. By combining her velvety-black botanical silhouettes with the subtle sky drawings and and the colorful earth pigments, Davidoff achieves an intriguing macro/micro effect of image and meaning.

The exhibition also includes several of the artist's large-scale drawings. In these monumental sized drawings and etchings, Davidoff approaches the landscape and its plant forms and layers from the vantage point of a couger.

Her newest works in the exhibition are a cycle of monotypes created at Flatbed.

Davidoff’s works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and she has received the Pollock-Siquieros Binational Art Award from the Ford Foundation, as well as a Mid-America Arts Alliance-National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at Kathryn Markel Fine Art in New York City.
