Hear Me With Your Eyes, an exhibition of photopolymer gravures by Josephine Sacabo, consists of excerpts from two recent portfolios, both inspired by poetry - one based on the work of the 17th century Mexican nun, Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz (Óyeme Con Los Ojos), and the other based on a series of sonnets by the contemporary poet, Dalt Wonk (Nocturnes).

Josephine Sacabo lives and works in New Orleans and San Miguel del Allende, Mexico. She is a native of Laredo, Texas, educated at Bard College, New York. While living and working in France and England, she became involved with theatre and photographic circles. In recent years, her photo-based work has become deeply imbued with the ambience of New Orleans and the mystical culture of the Guanajuato and has developed into a very subjective, introspective style. She credits poetry as the genesis of her work and lists poets as her most important influences, among them Rilke, Baudelaire, Pedro Salinas, Vincente Huiobro, Juan Rulfo, Mallarmé and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. “For me poetry and photography have in common the ability to distill an idea or emotion into a single image. I am fascinated by the correspondence between the two arts, their underlying unity, and the manifestation of this correspondence into a photograph.”

Sacabo describes her photopolymer gravure method as “A technique I feel can express with depth and subtlety anything I want to say.” The images are hand-printed on handmade Japanese tissue using the chine collé process. Sacabo, has published four books of her work including "Une Femme Habitée" in Paris in 1991 by Editions Marval; award winning "Pedro Paramo" in 2002 by the University of Texas Press; "Cante Jondo" in 2002 and “Duino Elegie” in 2005 both by 21st Publishing. Sacabo has had solo shows in New Orleans, Paris, London, Madrid, Toulouse, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and other major U.S. cities. Her work has also been widely published in magazines in the United States and Europe and is in numerous Museum collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art - N.Y., The Smithsonian - Washington D.C. and The Library of Congress. Joséphine Sacabo has taught at a number of highly acclaimed workshops: the Center for Photography at Woodstock, the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles - France and at the Santa Fe Workshops.
