Flatbed Press and Gallery presents works by artist Alice Leora Briggs, including selections from The Room, a suite of twelve woodcut prints, each corresponding to a line of Mark Strand’s poem of the same title.

An occupation with human frailty is integral to Alice Leora Briggs’ work. She clusters images created in previous centuries; drawings made of spaces she passes through, people she knows, objects she encounters; and photographs translated from newspapers, magazines and the internet. For more than a decade she has focused her attention on Ciudad Juárez. La Ventana, probes the resilience of one member of a community within an insane asylum on that city’s periphery. A recent series of woodcuts explores a twelve-line universe,The Room, a poem by Mark Strand. Each of her images conjures one line from the poem. The world she creates is brittle, tenuous, and furtive. Briggs describes this series of images as “an alarmingly accurate autobiography.”
