Vitam Corporis: The Body in Print

Our bodies. Our first experience of life is experiencing life through the senses that our bodies own.  We see, we taste, we smell, we touch, we hear our own bodies first.  We navigate our space with the muscles of our bodies and if we are able, we learn to run, dance, sing, draw, cook, sculpt, write and carry out complex physical actions.  As we age, we become acutely aware of the moral state of the body we are given.

Artists have celebrated the body since the beginning of time.  Some first marks in cave paintings have been the outline of hands.  Tracing the subject matter through art history is a fascinating exercise that reveals artists creating the body divine, the ideal body, the corporal body, the transcendent body, bodies in ecstasy, existential bodies, humans stripped bare of pretense.  Our body has been and will ever be our most profound subject.
