Joan Winter's art practice has focused on the creation of works that bring viewers to quiet moments induced by the luminosity of light and water. She intends to create the the momentary transcendent experience that light may give us. Her sculpture, paintings and prints are permeated with this intention. Joan writes in depth about the suite of four etchings titled DEEP which were co-published with Flatbed Press in 2018.
"The suite of Deep prints reflects my interest in light, time and subtle color. Recently on a bright summer day, I photographed waterfalls at the Water Gardens in Ft. Worth, Texas, designed by the renowned architect, Philip Johnson, as an “oasis in the city”. I was drawn to the energy of the rushing water and reflections of light patterns on the surface of the water. I am currently working on a series of drawings of delicate elusive cloud formations at different times of day. To make the Deep series, I was inspired by the similarities of the waterfall photos and my abstract drawings of cloud formations.
I used an experimental aquatint process to create the copper plate for the etching series referencing both the waterfall images and cloud drawings. To make the series of four prints, I developed several unique ink colors, investigating the subtle shifts in color caused by sunlight conditions at different times of day. The Deep series prints are part of my recent body of work, Edge of Light.
