"THE ROOM" BY ALICE LEORA BRIGGS

A suite of twelve woodcuts

"The Room” is a suite of twelve woodcuts that pays homage to Mark Strand’s poem, The Room. Alice Leora Briggs corresponded with the poet throughout development of the suite and traveled to New York to sign the colophon together on November 9, 2014, 20 days before his death. Each woodcut consists of an image with a single line of Strand’s poem carved into the block’s predella. There are twelve woodcut images paired with the twelve lines in the poem. The artist cut the block from a 17 x 20 inch panel of 10-ply birch. Then, working with a master printer, created multiple trial proofs with different placements of Kitakata chine collé onto Rives 280 gsm BFK. The final versions of the woodcuts were published in in an edition of 24. The first 14 impressions are included in boxed suites. Each suite includes 12 woodcuts that correspond to lines in the poem, a title page, poem broadsheet and colophon. Publication date is August 31st, 2016. The image from the eighth block is featured here but to view all twelve images link to the artist’s Flatbed page.
