Collection: DENNY MCCOY
Using three minimal stage-bit aquatint plates, McCoy created two etchings of many delineations of color, to increasingly complex representations incorporating variations of a monochromatic palette.
“The thing that's most intriguing to me about working with two dimensions is that it provides the chance to explore illusion. The act of seeing is a fluid and ever changing experience, and the time we spend looking affords the possibility for our awareness to fluctuate. What was fluid can solidify and then upon added investigation once again dissolve. Sometimes what appears to be obvious will disappear with close observation and then reappear on further inspection.
This work evolved from minimal pieces containing many delineations of color, to increasingly complex representations incorporating variations of a monochromatic palette. Most take quite a few minutes to see, and the inherent subtleties only become evident as we spend time viewing each piece. And as their intonations become more clearly visible, they in turn start to shift, with the effect being of motion and change. For me they are very real representations of what it's like to be in the world. The more I stop and quietly look at my surroundings the clearer it is that change is consistently present, and the more I pay attention, the less I can accurately account for what's in front of me.” Denny McCoy, 2017
