Collection: SUE HEATLEY

Living and working in Richmond, Virginia,  Sue Heatley draws inspiration from nature and the complex inter-relationships she finds there.   “All my work is rooted in nature or in natural phenomena, like wind or currents or waves,” Heatley says, adding that her pieces are not a direct translation, but rather her interpretation of what she sees before her. “For me, it’s really important that art doesn’t hit you in the face with its meaning. You have to come to it as a viewer and make your own sense out of it.”

One of her favorite mediums is linocut, a relief process that involves carving images into unmounted battleship linoleum on burlap.  Often as in the "Natural Order Suite" she carves multiple lino blocks and prints them in layers onto Japan paper.
