A monotype is a unique print, while a monoprint is created from a repeatable matrix,
creating multiple prints that share a common drawing. In this workshop, you will have
the opportunity to expand your printmaking vocabulary by working hands-on with a
matrix and experimenting with vibrant color applications. You will learn four distinct
methods for adding color to your matrix: chine collé, à la poupée, monotype, and relief
roll.
Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking method that does not require grounds or acids to
create incised lines. This direct approach is favored by many artists for its expressive
and spontaneous qualities. With a sharp needle or metal scribe, you can freely draw
directly onto the plate’s surface. For this workshop, Akua plates are used, which make it
possible to see your underlying sketch if you wish. The lines you create will produce
both fine marks and burrs, resulting in rich, dark, velvety impressions that sit beautifully
on the paper. You will complete both the creation of your plate and the proofing process
in a single day.
No previous experience in etching or printmaking is necessary, as all foundational
techniques are covered. For those of you with etching experience, the workshop is an
opportunity to expand your intaglio expertise, and access Flatbed's professional print facility.
