Introducing Print 101: Intro to Print Mediums led by our Master Printer Joshua Orsburn. This is a unique opportunity to get an introduction to the four cornerstones of printmaking: Etching, Relief, Monotype, and Lithography.
- Etching Etching is an intaglio printmaking process where an artist uses acid to "bite" into a metal plate to create an image. The plate is covered with a waxy, acid-resistant ground, then drawn upon with a needle to expose the metal, which is then submerged in acid to etch the design.
- Relief printmaking is a technique where the image is printed from the raised, uncut surface of a matrix. Areas not intended to print are carved away, leaving the design in relief.
- Monotype is a printing process that creates unique, one-of-a-kind prints by painting or drawing with ink onto a non-porous, smooth surface and transferring the image to paper. It is characterized by its painterly, non-reproducible nature and allows for experimental techniques, including additive (painting on) and subtractive (wiping away) methods.
- Lithography is a printing method that uses the principle that oil and water repel each other; an artist draws with a greasy substance on a flat stone or plate, which is then treated so that only the drawing accepts oil-based ink, allowing it to be transferred to paper, producing detailed prints.
Class is held every Monday for four weeks and a bonus optional open studio session is available to the class on Thursday each week.
