Vinyl, a smooth plastic material, can be used just like hard ground as an acid resistance to protect areas of copper plate.Richie Peña will demonstrate vinyl as an acid resistance to create positive or negative silhouette cutout imagery using a Cricut cutter and hand cutting. This process will allow students to develop rich velvet solid black areas or tonalities through aquatint etching and stop-out. The vinyl material will be hand-cut, or students familiar with using a Cricut cutter can bring in pre-cut vinyl. Richie will also demonstrate the application of aquatint and etching for any level of artists interested in learning this etching printmaking process. Students will be given two 8”x6” copper plates that may be used to create two separate bodies of work or be combined to create a more intricate, two-plate print. This class is open to all levels and will introduce a technique using vinyl as a stencil for copper etching.
